Families migrated to Frankfurt from the neighbouring town of Hanau at frequent intervals from the 14th century onwards. The family of Benedict of Hanau was accepted into the Frankfurt community in 1641, and achieved considerable wealth through marriages to the Wertheimer and Goldschmidt families and by their own activities in the luxury cloth trade. They lived in the Strauss for some two hundred years.
