The Flesch family migrated from Prague in 1530 and settled at first in the Flasche, from which they derived their family name. Initially the Flesches worked as schoolteachers, and the famous teacher Akiwa of Frankfurt was probably a member of their family. Up till the 17th century the family was of modest means, but a variety of businesses brought them wealth during the 18th century.
