There were several families called Wetzlar in Frankfurt from the start of the 16th century, some of them also called Ostheim on occasion. Parts of these families were very wealthy, and their activities included banking and the cloth trade. One of the older Wetzlar families lived in the Roter Turm and Bunter Löwe in the 17th century, combining great wealth with great learning.
