The Urschel family, also known as Orschel or Urschel, may have originated in Niederursel or Oberursel, north of Frankfurt. They lived in the Judengasse from about 1620 in the Rote Traube. The family may be closely related to one of the Mainz families. The historian Alexander Dietz describes the family as very prosperous, although it does not appear in public life in the Jewish community, for example as holders of particular offices.
