Prominent Jewish scholars frequently stayed in Frankfurt, mostly as rabbis. They attracted young men from outside Frankfurt to study under them at the yeshivah, a theological academy. The students mostly lived with Frankfurt Jewish families. They had to pay a fee as students, part of which went to the city council and mayors. The city council tolerated the Jewish students grudgingly, and the residence code of 1616 prohibited them from leaving the Judengasse and entering the Christian part of the city. As a result the students had to live a very restricted life within the confines of the Judengasse. The students were by no means all young bachelors: at the beginning of the 18th century there was a married man with five children living in the Schwarzer Adler who is recorded as studying.
