Rabbi Simon Hadarschan Aschkenazi lived in Frankfurt in 1200. He is regarded as the first great rabbinical figure of Frankfurt. He was first and foremost a preacher, as indicated by the Hebrew expression "Hadarshan". He is known as the author of an important work still famous today, the "Yalkut Shimoni" ("Collected Works of Simon") although his authorship is disputed. This work was first printed in Salonica between 1521 and 1526, and reprinted in Jerusalem in 1960. It incorporates more than 20,000 quotations and verdicts from the Talmud and other religious writings. A contemporary rhyme says: "Rabbi Simon at the gate, knows every last word of the Torah." The gate is presumably a house at the Fischerpforte gate.
