The Sichel family is closely related to the Aschaffenburg family of doctors who acquired right of residence in Frankfurt in 1509. It took its family name from its house, Sichel. The family was initially relatively poor, but in the mid18th century the brothers Callmann Joseph and Herts Joseph zur Sichel became very wealthy through prominent business transactions. Their descendants included traders and money lenders and bankers.
