Shavuot is one of the three Jewish pilgrim festivals on which pilgrimages have been made to Jerusalem since Biblical times. Harvest gifts were brought to the Temple which stood there until the year 70 CE. Shavuot is celebrated as the Festival of Weeks in May/June seven weeks after Pesach hence its name. In Israel it lasts one day, and outside Israel it lasts two. It was originally a harvest thanksgiving festival, but today its significance centres around the revelation of God on Mount Sinai and the associated belief in the divine source of the Torah. The special features of the festival include decorating the home and synagogue with flowers and plants. Dairy products and special pastries are eaten.
