Within the Judengasse in Frankfurt there were several families and individuals with the name Mainz. The name comes from the city of that name. Jews migrated from there to Frankfurt from the late Middle Ages onwards, but principally during the 16th and 17th centuries. In his account of the Frankfurt Jews the historian Alexander Dietz identifies 10 distinct families named Mainz. The common name only indicates that they came from the same place, not that they were related. Only a few of the families and individuals listed by Dietz attained a measure of importance in Frankfurt, and traces of the others disappear at an early stage. One Mainz family lived in the Goldener Greif during the 17th and 18th centuries, and are believed to have achieved great wealth. One member held office as a "master builder" for a brief period.
