Katz

The name Katz, like the name Cahn or Cohen, originally indicated a family which belonged to the Jewish priestly class. In the Judengasse around 1800, there was one family with the established family name "Katz". They were descendants of the 18thcentury butcher Salomon Katz. The family name Katz was an abbreviation of the yiddish word kazef, meaning "butcher". The Katz family lived in the Goldener Hut, and handed down the trade of butcher from father to son. The family included a trader, a rag-and-bone man, and a second-hand clothes dealer.
