The Hahn family lived in Frankfurt from 1530 onwards. For a long period the Roter Hahn was their family home. Early in the 17th century the family produced an important rabbi, Juspa Hahn. The family later split into several branches which adopted different names.In addition to the Schwelm family, who were not of major significance in Frankfurt, the descendents of the Hahn family included Frankfurt's most famous Jewish family, the Rothschilds. The old Hahn family had itself been of modest means for centuries. They first enjoyed substantial success after 1800 from their banking activities. The family left its mark on the appearance of Frankfurt, since at the beginning of the 20th century they donated the Merkurbrunnen fountain which stands in front of the entrance to the Frankfurt Fair.
