Günzburg

The name Günzburg occurs frequently among Frankfurt Jews from the end of the 16th century to the start of the 18th century. It comes from the town of Günzburg on the Danube, from which a number of families migrated to Frankfurt. They may have been related to some extent. The most prominent family was Simon zur Gemse, living at the Günzburg. The name Günzburg disappeared from Frankfurt during the 18th century, because branches of the family adopted other names, such as Stiebel.
