There were several families named Epstein in Frankfurt. Some at least originated from the small town of that name in the Taunus. The oldest and most numerous Epstein family lived in Frankfurt long before the creation of the Judengasse, and played an important part in the early period of the Judengasse in the 15th and 16th century. The family produced a succession of rabbis, some of importance.
