Delmedigo was one of the most famous doctors and scholars of his day. He was born in Crete. Like most Jewish doctors of the time he studied and took his doctorate at the university of Padua. He wrote a series of treatises on mathematical, astronomical and philosophical issues, and he was in contact with Galileo in Italy. Clearly he regarded his studies as incidental to his work as a doctor, as his services were in great demand. He worked in Egypt, Constantinople, Lithuania, Hamburg, Amsterdam and other centres of Jewish life before he came to Frankfurt in 1631, where he was appointed community doctor by the Jewish community. Delmedigo had a great reputation in Frankfurt, and Christian citizens also came to him. He left Frankfurt again around 1640 and went to Prague, where he died in 1655. One of Delmedigo's students, Zalmann Bingen at the Blume, married his daughter and succeeded him in Frankfurt as the community doctor.
