Arnold Lazarus was rabbi to the Jewish community from 1904 to 1932, and belonged to the Jewish Reform Movement. Arnold Lazarus was born in 1877 in Breslaw, where his father was Principal of the Jewish Theological Seminary. Lazarus passed his rabbinical examination at this seminary while simultaneously studying at the University of Breslaw, where he graduated. After teaching religion in Breslaw, he was summoned to Frankfurt in 1904, practising there alongside Rabbi Caesar Seligmann and later with Rabbi Georg Salzberger. Lazarus was a much loved spiritual comforter, respected above all as a spokesman for the community. He belonged to many Frankfurt associations and lodges, and fought energetically against antisemitism. Lazarus was a field chaplain in the First World War. He died in 1932 and was buried by the Gate of Honour in the Jewish cemetery in the Eckenheimer Landstraße.
