Abraham Naftali Herz Halevi was community rabbi from 1560 to 1599, and lived in the house Eichel. In 1583 he reasserted the jurisdictional regulations of the Frankfurt rabbinate limiting intervention by outside rabbis in the affairs of the Frankfurt Jewish community. During his period of office, the community leadership first issued the regulation that rabbis and rabbinical judges could only correspond with Jewish communities under foreign rule after obtaining the community leadership's permission. After this, rabbis were increasingly subject to the leadership's control.
