The Schiff was built around 1570. Its main occupants were a branch of the Cahn family, which took the house name of Schiff as their family name. For centuries this continued to be one of the most prominent of the Frankfurt Jewish families. At the end of the 17th century the house was occupied by one of the family's bestknown members (historically speaking), the rich and highlyrespected David Schiff, one of the few great Jewish booksellers. After the great fire of 1711 the house was mainly occupied by other families, and the Schiff family members lived in other houses in the Judengasse. In the great fires in the Judengasse in 1711, 1721 and 1796 the house was destroyed three times. It was rebuilt after the first two fires, but after the 1796 fire it was decided to redevelop the entire northern end of the Judengasse on spacious lines, in the course of which the house disappeared finally.
