The Goldene Kanne was built in 1593. It was mainly occupied by the two rich and powerful Kann and Stern families. The two families were closely related. They also occupied parts of the neighbouring (Weiße) Kanne and Weißer Stern, which had structural links with the Goldene Kanne through the division of land and buildings. They were very successful, particularly in the moneylending and banking and moneychanging business. In the great fires in the Judengasse in 1711, 1721 and 1796 the house was destroyed three times. It was rebuilt after the first two fires, but after the 1796 fire it was decided to redevelop the entire northern end of the Judengasse on spacious lines, in the course of which the house disappeared finally.
